Yesler Community Collaborative partners are joining forces to create four temporary park locations as part of PARK(ING) DAY + 2016. This annual Seattle event temporarily turns on-street parking spots into pop-up public spaces. Participating organizations include International Living Future Institute, Interim CDA, Capitol Hill Housing, SCIDpda and Seattle 2030 District.
PARK(ING) DAY will take place on Friday, Sept. 16 and Saturday, Sept. 17. All four sites will focus on #removingthegrey and exploring various ways to #bringbackthegreen. The four sites in YCC neighborhoods include the following:
Capitol Hill
12th Ave Arts (1620 12th Ave)
Pike/Pine
Summit Ave (Howell & Olive)
International District/Chinatown
S. King St below I-5
Little Saigon
12th and Jackson
The individual sites will include a variety of themes and activities. Some will explore sustainable strategies and a re-imagining of parking spaces. Others will demonstrate how storm water can flow through an urban site. Other pop-up parks will feature activities for neighbors and families in the form of craft projects or games.
The project at 12th Ave. Arts is entitled Bees to Salmon: Exloring Urban Rainwater. It makes the invisible visible in terms of how our cities manage urban rainwater. It includes a prototype of a modular rain garden, which is a strategic water quality management tool for urban neighborhoods. The parklet highlights the opportunities to create urban habitat for pollinators upstream, while protecting salmon downstream. An interactive bicycle installations will allow participants to clean stormwater and understand the basic components of rain garden systems.
